Aperture Trick #40 – Understanding Version Sets & Stacks

Filed under: Tricks — Scott @ 2:42 pm

Several of you have emailed me regarding your confusion between version sets and stacks. While they appear to be identical at first blush, they aren’t.

Simply put, a Stack is a group of images that all have different master images. A Version Set is a group of images that share the same master image. Version sets have a common light gray border around them.

To illustrate this point, create a new version of any master image. You now get what looks like a stack, but it has a light gray border around the two pictures.

Now to further muck things up, you can have a Stack that contains Version Sets! Just remember that Stacks have multiple masters and Version Sets do not and you should be fine.
